Functional Diagnostics / CMD

You wake up in the morning not feeling wide-awake at all, not rested since your neck hurts or are afflicted by sleep disorders or apnoea, as much by persisting shoulder problems. Does this sound only too familiar? At times it could be that you cannot quite open your mouth fully and your jaws click or you grind your teeth. Now, what does the neck have to do with the jaw? Quite a lot actually. If these symptoms apply to you then you could be suffering from what is known as the craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). This can affect the rest of the body badly.

The teeth, mandibular joint and masticatory musculature together form a highly sensitive, very precise and perfectly synchronized system. The slightest of changes can cause headaches, neck aches leading to postural defects and even tinnitus, or vertigo, ear aches, impaired vision and restricted movements in the cervical area. The causes for such an occlusal dysfunction are many. A history of orthodontic treatment, tooth loss or tooth replacement and trauma or emotional stress can be the likely reasons for this condition.

For us it is crucial that we prevent this and treat existing conditions. After all, a functioning mandibular system is key to hundred percent dental health. We get down to the root of the problems with you: after a comprehensive discussion we manually check the mandibular joint and ligaments. This manually conducted structure analysis serves to determine whether the problem lies in your masticatory musculature, occlusion or the mandibular joint. That being the case, we run a counter check; an instrumental functional analysis goes to confirm and verify the initial diagnosis.

The line of treatment to be followed rests entirely on individual requirements. It could as well call for physiotherapy, like the splint therapy. Medication as per diagnosis is used to relax muscles and prevent inflammations. In exceptional cases it may even make sense to use Muskelrelaxans treatment. In any case, a therapy is meant to prevent further problems and boosts quality of life tremendously.

Maintaining longevity of dental prosthesis In the interest of maintaining the life of dental prosthesis and of dealing with individual teeth position and mandibular joint condition, we use state-of-art procedures like computer-assisted Axiography, Cadiax DIR or Zebris. This is required particularly for grinding teeth (Bruxism) or mandibular joint problems. Dental prosthesis are fabricated based on the readings as per individual requirements and personal anatomy.
